SYNOPSIS:
For years, the Düsseldorf City Museum struggled to organize an exhibition in honor of Jewish art dealer Max Stern. Originally planned for 2018, it was not held until 2021, delayed by discussions about the restitution of art looted by the Nazis. Through a combination of interviews and rarely seen stock footage the film examines questions of ownership, history and morality that the Director views as symptomatic of a crisis in Germany and the art world at large.
